When I’m writing, I like to listen to the artist I’m talking about. I find that music is meant to inspire, so what better way to write about someone than through the channel that they use to influence your thoughts and emotions.
With Views, however, I wasn’t sure whether I should listen to the album or Drake’s interview with Zane Lowe, because both tell the story. I decided on listening to the album, I didn’t want Drake to tell me how he felt, I wanted to interpret from the sound. This is what Views told me.
The Views we received last night is not what we were expecting, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t great. What we know now is that Views isn’t an album you’ll hear on loop in the club, The Boy gave us that already- twice. Views also isn’t Take Care nor is it Nothing Was The Same. Sometimes, I forget, but like all of us, Drake is human and as humans, we are in a constant state of change and progression based on our experiences.
In the two years since we first heard about Views, Drake has experienced a lot, he’s grown into this sort of cultural super-villain, as his Bane-like characteristics display. For these reasons, Views serves as a timeless piece of art, one which features production that is both nostalgic and futuristic.
Other than the track, Hype, you won’t find much else on the album to benchpress or run at the gym to, but what you will find is a collection of contemplative self-analyses. Some of these thoughts will resonate, while others will give you an insight into a future self. Views allows you to reminisce with Drake about that one love that you no longer have in your physical grasp, but it doesn’t let you dwell in that moment. Views will take you to a place where you and those close to you are positioned at the heights you always imagined, because Views is inspirational.
Delivered Thursday night was a musical experience that exists in the present, but was created to last. This wasn’t about hits, charts, or anything nominal. This album was about taste, experience, and setting a standard. You might not realize it now, but I guarantee that it will happen.
With that, good luck on finals.
